How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 20 = 6.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.6 ÷ 20 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/20, so part = 33 × 20 ÷ 100 = 6.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.6 is the 33% share of 20. The remaining 67% is 13.4, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $20 saves $6.6, so you pay $13.4.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 20 by 33% gives 26.6 and decreasing it by 33% gives 13.4. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 17.822, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
