How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 100 = 35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 35 ÷ 100 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/100, so part = 35 × 100 ÷ 100 = 35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

35 is the 35% share of 100. The remaining 65% is 65, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $100 saves $35, so you pay $65.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 100 by 35% gives 135 and decreasing it by 35% gives 65. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 87.75, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 35. 35% of 100 and 100% of 35 are always equal (both are 35 × 100 ÷ 100 = 35), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
