How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 46 = 16.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16.1 ÷ 46 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/46, so part = 35 × 46 ÷ 100 = 16.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*46. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16.1 is the 35% share of 46. The remaining 65% is 29.9, and the two parts add back up to 46.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $46 saves $16.1, so you pay $29.9.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 46 by 35% gives 62.1 and decreasing it by 35% gives 29.9. These do not cancel out: raising 46 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 40.365, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
