How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 50 = 17.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/50, so part = 35 × 50 ÷ 100 = 17.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.5 is the 35% share of 50. The remaining 65% is 32.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $50 saves $17.5, so you pay $32.5.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 50 by 35% gives 67.5 and decreasing it by 35% gives 32.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 43.875, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
