How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 64 = 22.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22.4 ÷ 64 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/64, so part = 35 × 64 ÷ 100 = 22.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22.4 is the 35% share of 64. The remaining 65% is 41.6, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $64 saves $22.4, so you pay $41.6.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 64 by 35% gives 86.4 and decreasing it by 35% gives 41.6. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 56.16, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
