How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 70 = 24.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.5 ÷ 70 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/70, so part = 35 × 70 ÷ 100 = 24.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.5 is the 35% share of 70. The remaining 65% is 45.5, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $70 saves $24.5, so you pay $45.5.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 70 by 35% gives 94.5 and decreasing it by 35% gives 45.5. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 61.425, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
