How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 36 ÷ 100 = 0.36
  2. Multiply: 0.36 × 65 = 23.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23.4 ÷ 65 × 100 = 36%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 36/100 = part/65, so part = 36 × 65 ÷ 100 = 23.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =36%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23.4 is the 36% share of 65. The remaining 64% is 41.6, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 36% off an item priced $65 saves $23.4, so you pay $41.6.

Adding and taking away 36%

Increasing 65 by 36% gives 88.4 and decreasing it by 36% gives 41.6. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 36% and then lowering the result by 36% ends at 56.576, because the second 36% is taken of a bigger number.
