How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 39 ÷ 100 = 0.39
  2. Multiply: 0.39 × 90 = 35.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 35.1 ÷ 90 × 100 = 39%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 39/100 = part/90, so part = 39 × 90 ÷ 100 = 35.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =39%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

35.1 is the 39% share of 90. The remaining 61% is 54.9, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 39% off an item priced $90 saves $35.1, so you pay $54.9.

Adding and taking away 39%

Increasing 90 by 39% gives 125.1 and decreasing it by 39% gives 54.9. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 39% and then lowering the result by 39% ends at 76.311, because the second 39% is taken of a bigger number.
