How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 30 = 1.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.2 ÷ 30 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/30, so part = 4 × 30 ÷ 100 = 1.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.2 is the 4% share of 30. The remaining 96% is 28.8, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $30 saves $1.2, so you pay $28.8.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 30 by 4% gives 31.2 and decreasing it by 4% gives 28.8. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 29.952, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
