How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 62 = 2.48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.48 ÷ 62 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/62, so part = 4 × 62 ÷ 100 = 2.48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*62. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.48 is the 4% share of 62. The remaining 96% is 59.52, and the two parts add back up to 62.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $62 saves $2.48, so you pay $59.52.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 62 by 4% gives 64.48 and decreasing it by 4% gives 59.52. These do not cancel out: raising 62 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 61.9008, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
