How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 24 = 9.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.6 ÷ 24 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/24, so part = 40 × 24 ÷ 100 = 9.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
