How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 40 = 26
  3. Check: Work backwards: 26 ÷ 40 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/40, so part = 65 × 40 ÷ 100 = 26. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

26 is the 65% share of 40. The remaining 35% is 14, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $40 saves $26, so you pay $14.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 40 by 65% gives 66 and decreasing it by 65% gives 14. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 23.1, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
