How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 400 ÷ 100 = 4
- Multiply: 4 × 5 = 20
- Check: Work backwards: 20 ÷ 5 × 100 = 400%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 400/100 = part/5, so part = 400 × 5 ÷ 100 = 20. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =400%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 400% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 5: it is 4 times 5.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 400% of its $5 cost means selling it for $20.
Adding and taking away 400%
Increasing 5 by 400% gives 25. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 400% and then lowering the result by 400% ends at -75, because the second 400% is taken of a bigger number.
