How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 7 = 2.87
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.87 ÷ 7 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/7, so part = 41 × 7 ÷ 100 = 2.87. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.87 is the 41% share of 7. The remaining 59% is 4.13, and the two parts add back up to 7.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $7 saves $2.87, so you pay $4.13.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 7 by 41% gives 9.87 and decreasing it by 41% gives 4.13. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 5.8233, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
