How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 45 = 19.35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19.35 ÷ 45 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/45, so part = 43 × 45 ÷ 100 = 19.35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19.35 is the 43% share of 45. The remaining 57% is 25.65, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $45 saves $19.35, so you pay $25.65.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 45 by 43% gives 64.35 and decreasing it by 43% gives 25.65. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 36.6795, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
