How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 50 = 21.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/50, so part = 43 × 50 ÷ 100 = 21.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21.5 is the 43% share of 50. The remaining 57% is 28.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $50 saves $21.5, so you pay $28.5.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 50 by 43% gives 71.5 and decreasing it by 43% gives 28.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 40.755, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
