How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 47 ÷ 100 = 0.47
  2. Multiply: 0.47 × 40 = 18.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18.8 ÷ 40 × 100 = 47%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 47/100 = part/40, so part = 47 × 40 ÷ 100 = 18.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =47%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18.8 is the 47% share of 40. The remaining 53% is 21.2, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 47% off an item priced $40 saves $18.8, so you pay $21.2.

Adding and taking away 47%

Increasing 40 by 47% gives 58.8 and decreasing it by 47% gives 21.2. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 47% and then lowering the result by 47% ends at 31.164, because the second 47% is taken of a bigger number.
