How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 47 ÷ 100 = 0.47
  2. Multiply: 0.47 × 50 = 23.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 47%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 47/100 = part/50, so part = 47 × 50 ÷ 100 = 23.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =47%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23.5 is the 47% share of 50. The remaining 53% is 26.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 47% off an item priced $50 saves $23.5, so you pay $26.5.

Adding and taking away 47%

Increasing 50 by 47% gives 73.5 and decreasing it by 47% gives 26.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 47% and then lowering the result by 47% ends at 38.955, because the second 47% is taken of a bigger number.
