How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 47 ÷ 100 = 0.47
  2. Multiply: 0.47 × 55 = 25.85
  3. Check: Work backwards: 25.85 ÷ 55 × 100 = 47%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 47/100 = part/55, so part = 47 × 55 ÷ 100 = 25.85. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =47%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

25.85 is the 47% share of 55. The remaining 53% is 29.15, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 47% off an item priced $55 saves $25.85, so you pay $29.15.

Adding and taking away 47%

Increasing 55 by 47% gives 80.85 and decreasing it by 47% gives 29.15. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 47% and then lowering the result by 47% ends at 42.8505, because the second 47% is taken of a bigger number.
