How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48
- Multiply: 0.48 × 50 = 24
- Check: Work backwards: 24 ÷ 50 × 100 = 48%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 48/100 = part/50, so part = 48 × 50 ÷ 100 = 24. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =48%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
24 is the 48% share of 50. The remaining 52% is 26, and the two parts add back up to 50.
Discounts: 48% off an item priced $50 saves $24, so you pay $26.
Adding and taking away 48%
Increasing 50 by 48% gives 74 and decreasing it by 48% gives 26. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 48% and then lowering the result by 48% ends at 38.48, because the second 48% is taken of a bigger number.
