How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48
  2. Multiply: 0.48 × 80 = 38.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 38.4 ÷ 80 × 100 = 48%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 48/100 = part/80, so part = 48 × 80 ÷ 100 = 38.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =48%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

38.4 is the 48% share of 80. The remaining 52% is 41.6, and the two parts add back up to 80.

Discounts: 48% off an item priced $80 saves $38.4, so you pay $41.6.

Adding and taking away 48%

Increasing 80 by 48% gives 118.4 and decreasing it by 48% gives 41.6. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 48% and then lowering the result by 48% ends at 61.568, because the second 48% is taken of a bigger number.
