How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 25 = 12.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/25, so part = 49 × 25 ÷ 100 = 12.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12.25 is the 49% share of 25. The remaining 51% is 12.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $25 saves $12.25, so you pay $12.75.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 25 by 49% gives 37.25 and decreasing it by 49% gives 12.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 18.9975, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
