How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 55 = 26.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 26.95 ÷ 55 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/55, so part = 49 × 55 ÷ 100 = 26.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

26.95 is the 49% share of 55. The remaining 51% is 28.05, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $55 saves $26.95, so you pay $28.05.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 55 by 49% gives 81.95 and decreasing it by 49% gives 28.05. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 41.7945, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
