How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
- Multiply: 0.05 × 900 = 45
- Check: Work backwards: 45 ÷ 900 × 100 = 5%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 5/100 = part/900, so part = 5 × 900 ÷ 100 = 45. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =5%*900. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
45 is the 5% share of 900. The remaining 95% is 855, and the two parts add back up to 900.
Discounts: 5% off an item priced $900 saves $45, so you pay $855.
Adding and taking away 5%
Increasing 900 by 5% gives 945 and decreasing it by 5% gives 855. These do not cancel out: raising 900 by 5% and then lowering the result by 5% ends at 897.75, because the second 5% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 900% of 5. 5% of 900 and 900% of 5 are always equal (both are 5 × 900 ÷ 100 = 45), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
