How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 900 ÷ 100 = 9
- Multiply: 9 × 5 = 45
- Check: Work backwards: 45 ÷ 5 × 100 = 900%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 900/100 = part/5, so part = 900 × 5 ÷ 100 = 45. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =900%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 900% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 5: it is 9 times 5.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 900% of its $5 cost means selling it for $45.
Adding and taking away 900%
Increasing 5 by 900% gives 50. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 900% and then lowering the result by 900% ends at -400, because the second 900% is taken of a bigger number.
