How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Multiply: 0.5 × 160 = 80
  3. Check: Work backwards: 80 ÷ 160 × 100 = 50%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 50/100 = part/160, so part = 50 × 160 ÷ 100 = 80. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50%*160. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

80 is the 50% share of 160. The remaining 50% is 80, and the two parts add back up to 160.

Discounts: 50% off an item priced $160 saves $80, so you pay $80.

Adding and taking away 50%

Increasing 160 by 50% gives 240 and decreasing it by 50% gives 80. These do not cancel out: raising 160 by 50% and then lowering the result by 50% ends at 120, because the second 50% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 160% of 50. 50% of 160 and 160% of 50 are always equal (both are 50 × 160 ÷ 100 = 80), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
