How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 160 ÷ 100 = 1.6
  2. Multiply: 1.6 × 50 = 80
  3. Check: Work backwards: 80 ÷ 50 × 100 = 160%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 160/100 = part/50, so part = 160 × 50 ÷ 100 = 80. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =160%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 160% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 50: it is 1.6 times 50.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 160% of its $50 cost means selling it for $80.

Adding and taking away 160%

Increasing 50 by 160% gives 130. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 160% and then lowering the result by 160% ends at -78, because the second 160% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 50% of 160. 160% of 50 and 50% of 160 are always equal (both are 160 × 50 ÷ 100 = 80), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
