How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 45 = 22.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22.95 ÷ 45 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/45, so part = 51 × 45 ÷ 100 = 22.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22.95 is the 51% share of 45. The remaining 49% is 22.05, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $45 saves $22.95, so you pay $22.05.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 45 by 51% gives 67.95 and decreasing it by 51% gives 22.05. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 33.2955, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
