How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52
- Multiply: 0.52 × 5 = 2.6
- Check: Work backwards: 2.6 ÷ 5 × 100 = 52%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 52/100 = part/5, so part = 52 × 5 ÷ 100 = 2.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =52%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.6 is the 52% share of 5. The remaining 48% is 2.4, and the two parts add back up to 5.
Discounts: 52% off an item priced $5 saves $2.6, so you pay $2.4.
Adding and taking away 52%
Increasing 5 by 52% gives 7.6 and decreasing it by 52% gives 2.4. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 52% and then lowering the result by 52% ends at 3.648, because the second 52% is taken of a bigger number.
