How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 40 = 23.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23.2 ÷ 40 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/40, so part = 58 × 40 ÷ 100 = 23.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23.2 is the 58% share of 40. The remaining 42% is 16.8, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $40 saves $23.2, so you pay $16.8.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 40 by 58% gives 63.2 and decreasing it by 58% gives 16.8. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 26.544, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
