How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 100 = 6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6 ÷ 100 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/100, so part = 6 × 100 ÷ 100 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6 is the 6% share of 100. The remaining 94% is 94, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $100 saves $6, so you pay $94.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 100 by 6% gives 106 and decreasing it by 6% gives 94. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 99.64, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 6. 6% of 100 and 100% of 6 are always equal (both are 6 × 100 ÷ 100 = 6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
