How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 75 = 4.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.5 ÷ 75 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/75, so part = 6 × 75 ÷ 100 = 4.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.5 is the 6% share of 75. The remaining 94% is 70.5, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $75 saves $4.5, so you pay $70.5.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 75 by 6% gives 79.5 and decreasing it by 6% gives 70.5. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 74.73, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
