How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
- Multiply: 0.06 × 80 = 4.8
- Check: Work backwards: 4.8 ÷ 80 × 100 = 6%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/80, so part = 6 × 80 ÷ 100 = 4.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =6%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.8 is the 6% share of 80. The remaining 94% is 75.2, and the two parts add back up to 80.
Discounts: 6% off an item priced $80 saves $4.8, so you pay $75.2.
Adding and taking away 6%
Increasing 80 by 6% gives 84.8 and decreasing it by 6% gives 75.2. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 79.712, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
