How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 24 = 14.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14.4 ÷ 24 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/24, so part = 60 × 24 ÷ 100 = 14.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14.4 is the 60% share of 24. The remaining 40% is 9.6, and the two parts add back up to 24.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $24 saves $14.4, so you pay $9.6.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 24 by 60% gives 38.4 and decreasing it by 60% gives 9.6. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 15.36, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
