How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24
  2. Multiply: 0.24 × 60 = 14.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 24%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 24/100 = part/60, so part = 24 × 60 ÷ 100 = 14.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =24%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14.4 is the 24% share of 60. The remaining 76% is 45.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 24% off an item priced $60 saves $14.4, so you pay $45.6.

Adding and taking away 24%

Increasing 60 by 24% gives 74.4 and decreasing it by 24% gives 45.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 24% and then lowering the result by 24% ends at 56.544, because the second 24% is taken of a bigger number.
