How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 39 = 23.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23.4 ÷ 39 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/39, so part = 60 × 39 ÷ 100 = 23.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*39. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23.4 is the 60% share of 39. The remaining 40% is 15.6, and the two parts add back up to 39.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $39 saves $23.4, so you pay $15.6.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 39 by 60% gives 62.4 and decreasing it by 60% gives 15.6. These do not cancel out: raising 39 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 24.96, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
