How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 39 ÷ 100 = 0.39
  2. Multiply: 0.39 × 60 = 23.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 39%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 39/100 = part/60, so part = 39 × 60 ÷ 100 = 23.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =39%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23.4 is the 39% share of 60. The remaining 61% is 36.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 39% off an item priced $60 saves $23.4, so you pay $36.6.

Adding and taking away 39%

Increasing 60 by 39% gives 83.4 and decreasing it by 39% gives 36.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 39% and then lowering the result by 39% ends at 50.874, because the second 39% is taken of a bigger number.
