How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 84 = 50.4
- Check: Work backwards: 50.4 ÷ 84 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/84, so part = 60 × 84 ÷ 100 = 50.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*84. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
50.4 is the 60% share of 84. The remaining 40% is 33.6, and the two parts add back up to 84.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $84 saves $50.4, so you pay $33.6.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 84 by 60% gives 134.4 and decreasing it by 60% gives 33.6. These do not cancel out: raising 84 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 53.76, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
