How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 4 = 2.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.6 ÷ 4 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/4, so part = 65 × 4 ÷ 100 = 2.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.6 is the 65% share of 4. The remaining 35% is 1.4, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $4 saves $2.6, so you pay $1.4.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 4 by 65% gives 6.6 and decreasing it by 65% gives 1.4. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 2.31, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
