How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 65 = 2.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.6 ÷ 65 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/65, so part = 4 × 65 ÷ 100 = 2.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.6 is the 4% share of 65. The remaining 96% is 62.4, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $65 saves $2.6, so you pay $62.4.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 65 by 4% gives 67.6 and decreasing it by 4% gives 62.4. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 64.896, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
