How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 65 = 42.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 42.25 ÷ 65 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/65, so part = 65 × 65 ÷ 100 = 42.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

42.25 is the 65% share of 65. The remaining 35% is 22.75, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $65 saves $42.25, so you pay $22.75.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 65 by 65% gives 107.25 and decreasing it by 65% gives 22.75. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 37.5375, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
