How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 68 ÷ 100 = 0.68
  2. Multiply: 0.68 × 12 = 8.16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.16 ÷ 12 × 100 = 68%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 68/100 = part/12, so part = 68 × 12 ÷ 100 = 8.16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =68%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.16 is the 68% share of 12. The remaining 32% is 3.84, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 68% off an item priced $12 saves $8.16, so you pay $3.84.

Adding and taking away 68%

Increasing 12 by 68% gives 20.16 and decreasing it by 68% gives 3.84. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 68% and then lowering the result by 68% ends at 6.4512, because the second 68% is taken of a bigger number.
