How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 100 = 7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7 ÷ 100 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/100, so part = 7 × 100 ÷ 100 = 7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7 is the 7% share of 100. The remaining 93% is 93, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $100 saves $7, so you pay $93.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 100 by 7% gives 107 and decreasing it by 7% gives 93. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 99.51, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
