How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 43 = 3.01
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.01 ÷ 43 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/43, so part = 7 × 43 ÷ 100 = 3.01. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*43. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.01 is the 7% share of 43. The remaining 93% is 39.99, and the two parts add back up to 43.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $43 saves $3.01, so you pay $39.99.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 43 by 7% gives 46.01 and decreasing it by 7% gives 39.99. These do not cancel out: raising 43 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 42.7893, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
