How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 37 = 25.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 25.9 ÷ 37 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/37, so part = 70 × 37 ÷ 100 = 25.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*37. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

25.9 is the 70% share of 37. The remaining 30% is 11.1, and the two parts add back up to 37.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $37 saves $25.9, so you pay $11.1.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 37 by 70% gives 62.9 and decreasing it by 70% gives 11.1. These do not cancel out: raising 37 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 18.87, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
