How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 48 = 33.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 33.6 ÷ 48 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/48, so part = 70 × 48 ÷ 100 = 33.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*48. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

33.6 is the 70% share of 48. The remaining 30% is 14.4, and the two parts add back up to 48.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $48 saves $33.6, so you pay $14.4.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 48 by 70% gives 81.6 and decreasing it by 70% gives 14.4. These do not cancel out: raising 48 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 24.48, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
