How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
- Multiply: 0.7 × 9 = 6.3
- Check: Work backwards: 6.3 ÷ 9 × 100 = 70%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/9, so part = 70 × 9 ÷ 100 = 6.3. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =70%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.3 is the 70% share of 9. The remaining 30% is 2.7, and the two parts add back up to 9.
Discounts: 70% off an item priced $9 saves $6.3, so you pay $2.7.
Adding and taking away 70%
Increasing 9 by 70% gives 15.3 and decreasing it by 70% gives 2.7. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 4.59, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
