How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 71 ÷ 100 = 0.71
  2. Multiply: 0.71 × 25 = 17.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 71%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 71/100 = part/25, so part = 71 × 25 ÷ 100 = 17.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =71%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.75 is the 71% share of 25. The remaining 29% is 7.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 71% off an item priced $25 saves $17.75, so you pay $7.25.

Adding and taking away 71%

Increasing 25 by 71% gives 42.75 and decreasing it by 71% gives 7.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 71% and then lowering the result by 71% ends at 12.3975, because the second 71% is taken of a bigger number.
