How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 79 ÷ 100 = 0.79
  2. Multiply: 0.79 × 40 = 31.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31.6 ÷ 40 × 100 = 79%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 79/100 = part/40, so part = 79 × 40 ÷ 100 = 31.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =79%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31.6 is the 79% share of 40. The remaining 21% is 8.4, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 79% off an item priced $40 saves $31.6, so you pay $8.4.

Adding and taking away 79%

Increasing 40 by 79% gives 71.6 and decreasing it by 79% gives 8.4. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 79% and then lowering the result by 79% ends at 15.036, because the second 79% is taken of a bigger number.
