How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
  2. Multiply: 0.08 × 55 = 4.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.4 ÷ 55 × 100 = 8%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/55, so part = 8 × 55 ÷ 100 = 4.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =8%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.4 is the 8% share of 55. The remaining 92% is 50.6, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 8% off an item priced $55 saves $4.4, so you pay $50.6.

Adding and taking away 8%

Increasing 55 by 8% gives 59.4 and decreasing it by 8% gives 50.6. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 54.648, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.
